Pakistan — Flow Monitoring of Undocumented Afghan Returnees from Pakistan (30 April —6 May 2017)

IOM Pakistan’s Weekly Situation Report on the Return of Undocumented Afghans through the Torkham border during the reporting period 30th April - 6th May 2017.

·         During the week of 30th April - 6th May 2017, a total of 5,723 undocumented Afghans returned to Afghanistan from Pakistan through the Torkham border, approximately a 24 % increase in the return caseload compared with the previous reporting period. Bringing the total undocumented Afghan returning to Afghanistan from Pakistan since the beginning of the year to 35,001.

·         The top 5 province for returns are as follows: 57% of people returned to Nangarhar, 29% to Kabul, 4% to Laghman, 2% to Logar and 2% to Kunar.

·         During the reporting period, Lack of Documentation was the most commonly cited (88%) push factor (a 3% decrease from last week).

·         From last week, there is a 7% increase in the proportion of interviewees returning due to the availability of assistance in Afghanistan and a 2% decrease in the respondents citing “Improvement of security situation in Afghanistan” as a pull factor to return.

·         All families were reported to be travelling with their household items/personal belongings. Around 63% families were travelling with productive assets including agricultural tool/seeds, rickshaw, sewing machines, additionally 44% families also reported as taking cash with them, a 36% decrease from the previous reporting period.

·         In contrast to the previous reporting periods, returns can now also be observed from southern parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and from north east Punjab.
