2021 Migration Overview: Horn of Africa and Arabian Peninsula

The Eastern Route, which runs from the Horn of Africa to the Arabian Peninsula, in particular to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, has long been the busiest and most relevant migratory corridor in the East and Horn of Africa region.

South Sudan — Wau Naivasha Displacement Site Flow Monitoring (July-September 2021)

IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) continued conducting Displacement Site Flow Monitoring (DSFM) at the gates of Naivasha IDP Camp. During the third quarter, 2,250 interviews were conducted accounting for 9,751 individuals moving into / out of the camp.

Somalia — Border Point Flow Monitoring — (November 2021)

In November 2021, a total of 26,435 movements were observed at 7 Flow Monitoring Points (FMPs). This represents an increase of 43 per cent in comparison with November 2020 (8 months after the country’s first case of COVID-19) when 18,434 movements were observed.

South Sudan — Population count: Naivasha IDP Camp and Masna Collective Centre (October 2021)

In October 2021, the monthly population count was conducted at Masna Collective Centre where 3,679 individuals / 908 households were identified and Naivasha IDP Camp where 9,673 individuals / 2,468 households were counted.

South Sudan — Mangala Rapid Flow Monitoring (January - September 2021)

Since mid-June 2020, people in South Sudan have been affected by flooding in areas along the White Nile.

In September 2021, the monthly population count was conducted at Masna Collective Centre where 3,471 individuals / 926 households were identified and Naivasha IDP Camp where 8,456 individuals / 2,421 households were counted.

DTM conducts regular population counts to monitor population dynamics and displacement trends.

IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) continued conducting Displacement Site Flow Monitoring (DSFM) at the gates of Wau Masna Collective Centre. In the third quarter of 2021, 2,462 interviews were conducted representing 4,248 individual movements in and out of the collective centre.
