About

Displacement.iom.int is an IOM online platform designed to enhance access to Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) information products on internal displacement, including a visualization of the scale of displacement monitored by IOM. A second complementary platform by DTM, flow.iom.int, intends to visualise population flows. Each platform is designed to facilitate a better understanding of displacement and mobility trends within and between countries or regions.

Mobility tracking aims to quantify the presence of population categories within defined locations, with a frequency that captures mobility dynamics. Its approach is highly customizable: it can be light-touch or in-depth depending on the phase and requirements of the response, and it often increases in depth and detail over successive rounds. The online platform visualises mobility tracking data collected through baseline area assessments.

Baseline area assessments provide information on the presence of internally displaced populations in a defined administrative area, their reason and date of displacement and their shelter situation. Once a baseline or a list of locations hosting displaced populations has been identified, further location and/or site assessments are conducted to gather multi-layer and multi-themed data on the displaced groups. The objective of the location/site assessments is to collect in-depth data on the living conditions and needs of populations. This may include populations in camp and camp-like settings, or populations residing within host communities and/or areas of return of the observed population of concern.

The DTM dashboard for the month of January 2018 covers all 18 provinces of Burundi and identifies 175,936 internally displaced persons (IDPs) and 39,174 households. 82% if the identified population are women and youth under 18 years. Natural disasters are the main displacement reason (70%).

In the Gambella Region, DTM identified 21,570 displaced individuals comprising 4,314 households in 21 displacement sites.

806,913 displaced individuals comprising 118,719 households in 331 displacement sites were identified in Somali region. These figures represent an increase of 123,692 in the total individuals (18%), households (11%) and sites (4%) since round 7. 68% sites opened in 2017.

20,752 displaced individuals comprising 7,621 households in 61 displacement sites were identified in Tigray region. These figures represent an increase of 1,317 in the total individuals (4%), households (4.8%) and sites (3%) since round 7. Only 7 of the 61 sites opened in 2017.

IOM's Displacement Tracking Matrix has been monitoring displacement movements since 15 October 2017, when Iraqi security forces began moving into disputed areas that had previously been held by Kurdish forces.

772,242 displaced individuals comprising 124,982 households in 369 displacement sites were identified in Oromia region, which represents an increase of 46% in individuals and 53% in households. 79% of sites opened in 2017 and 27% of sites reported no access to food.

This document displays the site outlines for the following displacement sites: Jamtoli, Chakmarkul, Unchiprang, Shamlapur, Teknaf, and Kutupalong/Balukhali Expansion Site – Kutupalong RC.

IOM began collecting data on IDP movements in and out of the two main IDP sites in Dolow: Kabasa (population: 5,500 HHs) and Qansaxlay (population: 2,900 HHs).

The DTM data collection was conducted in collaboration with the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) between November 3rd and December 8th 2017. The majority of the recorded population were displaced in 2017, with 553 sites reportedly opened that year.

The data presented  show the changing trends between 2016 and 2017. Many more migrants were observed passing through the towns of Ségédine and Arlit in 2016 than in 2017. This is explained by more controls on migratory movements in Niger since October 2016 by the Government of Niger.

Les données présentées montrent les tendances migratoires entre 2016 et 2017. Beaucoup plus de migrant sétaient observés passant par les villes de Séguédine et Arlit en 2016 qu’en 2017.
