IOM’s biometric registration system has been active since 2014 with 944 004 beneficiaries active in its database to date, out of which 56 per cent (529 095 individuals) are female and 59 per cent (558 863 individuals) are under 18 years old. Since August 2018 IOM and the World Food Programme are collaborating on the project "Enhancing targeted food distribution through biometric data management" seeking to contribute to increased food security throughout South Sudan.

In June 2020 the monthly population count was conducted at Masna collective centre where 6,016 individuals were identified and Wau PoC AA with 9 990 individuals. The population of Wau PoC AA marginally increased from 9 ,956 individuals in May 2020 (increase by 49 individuals). Wau Masna saw a slight decrease in its population by 111 individuals since May 2020. For more information on these trends, including where new arrivals at Masna collective centre were displaced from and on destinations of those leaving Wau PoC AA, please consult the Displacement Site Flow Monitoring report.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government of Sudan (GoS) declared a nationwide health emergency and introduced mitigation measures in March 2020 to reduce the transmission of the virus. These measures include restrictions on travel due to closure of airports, points of entry (POE) along land borders and maritime boundaries, as well as domestic movement restrictions.

Data collection for Round 116 took place in May and June 2020. As of 30 June 2020, DTM identified 4,718,130 returnees (786,355 households), dispersed across 8 governorates, 38 districts, and 2,042 locations in Iraq. A lower number of new returnees was recorded in Round 116 (12,948) compared with the number recorded in Round 115 (44,778) and this number of new returnees constitute one of the lowest since returns started in 2015. The most common governorates that individuals returned to between May and June 2020 include Ninewa (where 7,542 individuals were recorded), Salah al-Din (3,222), and Anbar (1,578). As with Round 115, this low return rate is unsurprising as the Iraqi government authorities continue to impose mobility restrictions to curb the spread of of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

The Central Sahel area, and in particular the Liptako Gourma region, which borders Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, is affected by a complex crisis involving growing competition over dwindling resources; climatic variability; demographic pressure; high levels of poverty; disaffection and a lack of livelihood opportunities; communal tensions; the absence of state institutions and basic services; and violence related to organized crime and Non-State Armed Groups. The crisis has led to the death of an estimated 4,000 people in 2019 alone and triggered significant displacement of populations in the three affected countries. As of 22 July 2020, 1,516,525 individuals have been displaced, including 1,349,405 Internally Displaced Persons (89% of the displaced population) and 167,120 Refugees (11% of the displaced population). Sixty-six per cent of the displaced population (998,160 individuals) were located in Burkina Faso, while 17 per cent resided in Mali (258,370 individuals), 13 per cent in Niger (198,393 individuals) and 4 per cent in Mauritania (61,602 individuals).

The objective of the Emergency Tracking Tool (ETT) is to collect information on large and sudden population movements. Information is collected through key informant interviews or direct observation. This dashboard provides information on movements which took place from 7 to 16 July 2020 in three villages and four sites located in Lac Province. On 7 July 2020, with security conditions improving on the islands of Bol (Mamdi département), 70 households (347 individuals), who had previously been internally displaced (in the sous-préfecture of Bol), returned to their villages of origin. On 10 and 11 July 2020, following an armed attack which occurred on 9 July 2020 in the sous-préfecture of Ngouboua (Kaya département), 180 households (1,000 individuals) left the village of Litiri to take refuge in the sous-préfectures of Kaiga-Kindjiria and Liwa (Fouli département). On 11 and 16 July 2020, with insecurity growing in Lac Province, fear of armed attacks led 1,814 households (6,825 individuals) to flee their villages of origin, located in the sous-préfectures of Kaiga-Kindjiria (Fouli département), Kangalam (Mamdi département) and Ngouboua (Kaya département). They took refuge in the sous-préfectures of Liwa (Fouli département), Bol (Mamdi département) and Ngouboua (Kaya département).

The DTM has identified 136,610 internally displaced persons (IDPs) and 29,384 households in the month of June 2020.

The DTM Emergency Event Tracking (EET) is deployed to track sudden displacement and population movements, and provide more frequent updates on the scale of displacement and quantify the affected population when needed. As a subcomponent of the new Mobility Tracking methodology in Sudan (Round One), and activated on a needs basis, EET utilises a broad network of key informants to capture best estimates of the affected population presence per location – a useful tool for humanitarian response planning and design.
